Johannesburg - More than 20 people were injured when a fire broke out at Sasol's Secunda plant in Mpumalanga, the company said on Wednesday.

“Around 23 employees were treated at the local medical station, mostly for smoke inhalation. No employees were hospitalised,” Sasol spokesman Elton Fortuin said.

“At approximately 10pm last night (Tuesday), a fire occurred at Sasol’s synthol plant in Secunda. The fire was contained to a relatively small part of the plant.”

Fortuin said all employees were accounted for. He said emergency protocols were followed and all personnel evacuated. The plant was shut down and remained closed on Wednesday.

“There were no fatalities or significant injuries. The cause of the incident will be investigated and Sasol will fully co-operate with the relevant authorities in this regard.”

Police spokesman Colonel Leonard Hlathi was not aware of the incident and said he would check on it. - Sapa
