The death of seven people in a taxi accident in Mpumalanga on Monday highlights the need for effective enforcement of road rules, the Democratic Alliance said.

“We call on the departments of community safety and roads and transport to effectively police our road network and to enforce all rules and regulations without fear or favour,” said DA MPL Anthony Benadie.

Seven people were killed near Balfour on Monday morning when a mini-bus taxi overturned on the R23 close to the provincial border with Gauteng.

Spokesman for the Mpumalanga safety and security department Moeti Mmusi said nine seriously injured people were taken to hospital in Balfour and Heidelberg.

Benadie said the unacceptably high number of deaths on Mpumalanga's roads needed to be reduced as a matter of priority, and would require the co-operation of both government and the public

“This incident...once again highlights the many potential dangers road users face on a daily basis, emphasising the need for effective road use rules and their enforcement,” he said. - Sapa
