Five people died in a car accident in Mpumalanga on Sunday morning, said the provincial department of community safety and security.

Spokesman Moeto Mmusi said five people in an Opel sedan died when it collided with a stationary truck on the N17 between Trichardt and Bethel at 2.30am.

The truck had broken down and was parked on the shoulder of the road.

Musi said it was unclear how many people were in the truck.
