Johannesburg - Five people have been killed and seven injured in a collision involving an army truck and a light delivery vehicle in Mpumalanga, the Mpumalanga community safety department said on Sunday.

Spokesman Joseph Mabuza, in a statement, said a light delivery vehicle rammed into the rear of a military truck on the N2 between Pongola and Piet Retief on Saturday.

“Five of the deceased were occupants in an LDV (light delivery vehicle). Three of the four people who sustained serious injuries were occupants in an LDV while the fourth person was from (the) truck,” he said.

The driver of the LDV died in the accident, which happened around 6pm.

“Preliminary investigation indicates the LDV was overtaking on a barrier line and collided with the rear of the military truck,” he said.

The injured were taken to hospital for further treatment.

Mbuza said MEC Vusi Shongwe called on motorists to exercise more tolerance, especially when driving long distances, to avoid more accidents taking place.

Shongwe sent his condolences to the families of those affected and wished the injured a speedy recovery. - Sapa
