Johannesburg – The South African National Parks (SANParks) on Wednesday warned that the southern part of the Kruger National Park had become flooded after heavy rains in the area, prompting authorities to close some roads.

“Most of the Southern part of the Kruger National Park (KNP) and the catchment areas received some good rain overnight; resulting in some of the low water bridges overflowing and closed for traffic today,” said SANParks in a statement.

“The affected roads are S1 at Phabeni Gate and that road is closed up to the S3 intersection to Numbi Gate until further notice. The low water bridges at Sabie and Sand Rivers at Skukuza are also overflowing and are closed.”

SANParks said the closures were necessary to ensure visitors’ safety.

“Guests are advised to exercise caution and use alternative roads (tarred roads with high water bridges). Motorists should also be on the look-out for animals such as tortoise crossing roads and drinking water from little puddles on the road, “,said the Kruger National Park general manager, communications and marketing, William Mabasa.
