The trial of a 44-year-old man who allegedly raped his granddaughter while she was in his care at home was postponed in the Balfour Magistrate's Court on Monday, Mpumalanga police said.

“He was asked not to plead and the trial was postponed to November 22 for a formal bail application,” Sergeant Sam Tshabalala said.

The man was arrested on Friday at the home he shared with his wife, daughter and grandchildren in Joe Slovo settlement in Siyathemba.

The arrest came after the child apparently told a nursery school teacher that her grandfather had raped her several times while her grandmother was away.

The teacher informed the mother and a rape charge was laid. -
