Middelburg - A toddler, believed to be about 14 months old, drowned in a pool at Gholfsig in Middelburg, paramedics said on Thursday.

ER24 spokesman Derrick Banks said the toddler drowned on Wednesday afternoon.

He said paramedics rushed to the scene after receiving the call and found a member of public doing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) when they arrived.

They assessed the toddler and found she was still not breathing and had no pulse.

“Advanced life support intervention was performed on the patient along with CPR. The patient was intubated and placed on a ventilator before she was rushed off to hospital for rapid medical care,” he said.

“In the hospital, resuscitation continued with paramedics and trauma staff doing all they could to save the toddler's life. Unfortunately the toddler did not make it and died in hospital.”

He said it was believed the child fell into the pool while her mother, a domestic worker, was occupied elsewhere.

When she could not find her child, people searched the property and found her in the pool. - Sapa
