Johannesburg - An Air Force light plane crashed on Tuesday morning in Mpumalanga, leaving three dead.

Mabanga said there were five people in total on board of whom three died and two were injured and taken to hospital.

“Their condition is serious but stable,” he said.

Mabanga said it was not yet confirmed but he expected that all five on board were SANDF members, as they were involved in force preparation exercises.

“The caravan formed part of 41 Squadron that participated in an operations training camp in the Lydenburg area,” he said.

“A preliminary investigation is convened that will be followed by a Board of Enquiry, to determine the cause of the accident.

“The names of the deceased will be released as soon as next-of-kin are being informed.”

Mabanga had no information on the damage to the aircraft.
