A case of assault was opened after a teenage boy was critically injured when his school mates shoved a compressed air pipe into his rectum, said Mpumalanga police on Friday.
The boys family contacted the police who were now investigating, said Lt-Col Leonard Hlathi.
The Mpumalanga education department said the boy attended the Platorand School for disabled children in Belfast and was hospitalised in intensive care.
“We were told that about four learners inserted a pipe into his rectum and pumped 1/8compressed 3/8 air in him yesterday 1/8Thursday 3/8,” said spokesman Jasper Zwane.
The department had assigned a district director to investigate the matter further.
Zwane said the pupils had not been suspended.
“Given that they have disabilities, they were taken back home and are under parental supervision.”
Enews had reported that the boy's family were planning to sue the school for negligence.
Zwane could not confirm this. “We have not received any legal papers yet,” he said. - Sapa
