Johannesburg - Two people were killed and 113 were injured when a bus crashed into a ditch outside Nelspruit, Mpumalanga, on Wednesday morning, paramedics said.

“Paramedics found two critically injured people in the bus, but sadly both of them succumbed to their injuries while paramedics were busy working on them,” ER24 spokesman Werner Vermaak said.

Most of the injured sustained fractures and lacerations, and one of them was airlifted to hospital.

“Paramedics from numerous services are currently on the scene to assist the injured,” he said.

“The patients will be transported to various hospitals in the area.”

Vermaak said family members of the injured also started arriving at the scene while people were being extricated.

Bystanders told paramedics the bus crashed on Kanyamazane Road, roughly 15kms outside Nelspruit. Its destination was not known yet.

“It is understood that a second vehicle was also involved in this collision,” said Vermaak.
