Two youths were killed and another was critically injured when their car smashed into a tree in Middelburg, Mpumalanga police said on Monday.

“According to a witness who was also driving on the road, a Red VW Polo, with three occupants overtook him at a very high speed. He then saw the driver of the Polo losing control of the vehicle before hitting a tree,” Captain Olga Ballot said on Monday. The accident occurred on Saturday on Asalia Street at 6.30pm.

“This street runs according to the pattern of a river in Middelburg, and therefore has many curves.”

The driver aged 20, and a passenger, aged 17, a pupil at the HTS Middelburg, both died on the scene.

“The driver of the car was trapped in the vehicle, while the other passenger was flung out.”

The other 20-year-old injured passenger, who worked with the driver at Samancor Fitter and Turners in Middelburg, was still in a critical condition.

“He has a fractured shoulder and collar bone, bleeding on the brain, and has not responded since the accident,” she said.

According to Beeld the two killed were Tiaan Janse van Rensburg and Heinrich Venter, 17. The wounded man was named as Allen Lotter. - Sapa
