Mpumalanga -

There is a high risk of veld fires in Mpumalanga this long weekend, a provincial official said on Wednesday.

Co-operative governance spokesman Simphiwe Kunene said the province was sitting at a high fire index. Disaster management teams were monitoring the situation.

“Residents are urged to be extremely cautious and make sure that they do not start fires in the open veld,” said Kunene.

“All fires (should be) controlled and they must make sure that fires are completely put out before leaving that area. They must not throw away burning cigarette stubs in the open veld.”

Kunene called on residents to be extra cautious when using heaters and other electrical appliances.

“A special word of caution is sent to parents, to make sure that children are not left alone with fires and heating appliances, especially due to the extremely cold conditions.”

The department had instructed all municipalities to be on full alert and standby for any possible fires. - Sapa
