A 50-year-old woman was arrested for allegedly killing her husband's lover and wounding him in Siyathemba township near Balfour, Mpumalanga police said on Sunday.

“The 41-year-old woman was walking on Mashinini Street with her boyfriend from a tavern in the early hours of the morning, when the wife of the boyfriend emerged from a street corner and accosted them,” said Captain Andries Shabalala.

The wife was apparently waiting for them on Saturday morning.

“It seemed the wife knew that the two would walk on that street at that time and waited for them. After confronting the pair about their affair, a heated argument broke out.”

The wife allegedly pulled out a knife and tried to stab the girlfriend, but the husband intervened and stopped her.

“The furious wife then stabbed her husband once in the left arm, and he ran away. She then stabbed his girlfriend once in the back, killing her instantly,” said Shabalala.

The wife then allegedly ran away.

Passers-by found the woman's body lying on the street at about 5am and called the police.

“The police followed leads and bust the woman at her home in the same township a few hours later. Her husband also came to our station to report the matter shortly after she was arrested.”

The wife was charged with murder and was expected to appear in the Balfour Magistrate's Court on Monday. - Sapa
