Witbank - A day at work ended tragically for a team of construction workers after one drowned in a sewerage drain on which they had been working in Witbank, Mpumalanga.

It was unclear how the accident happened yesterday morning, but it seemed that the three men working on the drain fell into it. Paramedics said two men had already been pulled out by fellow workers when they arrived on the scene in Dan Pienaar Avenue.

The third man was still trapped in the drain.

“The two men were assessed and treated for minor cuts and abrasions. They were also treated for shock,” said ER24 spokesman Derrick Banks.

“The circumstances around the incident are unclear, but it’s believed that the three men were hired to unblock a sewerage drain when the incident took place.”

He said the two were ferried to hospital.

Rescue workers spent about four hours searching for the other worker. His body was eventually discovered at about 3pm.
