Johannesburg - The City of Johannesburg on Wednesday plans to evict a group of non-governmental organisations illegally occupying two of its buildings.
“The eviction will go ahead, according to our lawyers,” the city's spokesperson Nkosinathi Nkabinde said.
“But I doubt it will get violent.”
The evictions were scheduled to be carried out on Tuesday, but due to legal matters, they were postponed.
The two buildings are the Nedbank building on Commissioner Street and the Braamfischer Towers building on Albert Street.
Nkabinde said in 2009 the two privately owned buildings were acquired for a project, which were sub-let to NGOs through the Johannesburg Property Company (JPC). Lease agreements were signed with JPC.
The lease agreement between the city and Inspret (for Braamfischer Towers) ended on 30 September last year. A month later the lease agreement for the Nedbank building ended.
“Organisations that had been accommodated at the Braamfischer Towers site have refused to vacate the building, continuing in illegal occupancy of the property well beyond the point of lease expiry.”
Nkabinde said they were notified in April 2011 ahead their deadline.
“Following an unsuccessful court battle to legitimise their illegal occupancy, the NGOs were ordered to vacate the office space on 30th June 2012,” he said.
