Johnson & Johnson’s Nicorette patches – to help smokers kick the habit – have been removed from shelves and there is no indication when they will return.

Laura Nel, spokeswoman for the company, said the registration of the new patches to the Medical Control Council (MCC) had not yet been approved. Nel said they had applied to the MCC last year and were awaiting a response.

People trying to quit will have to do without 15mg, 10mg and 5mg Nicorette patches.

Alternatives are gum, anti-smoking pills and a spray.
