Rustenburg – A seven-year-old boy drowned in a quarry at Moshawane, near Mahikeng, the North West department of education said on Friday.

Acting department spokesperson Elias Malindi, said the Grade 1 learner at Mojamorago Primary school drowned on Wednesday.

“It is alleged that the quarries after heavy rains were full of water. The learner and his friends after school went for swimming at a nearby quarry. The friends, after swimming, left and went home without reporting to their parents that one of them was missing. They slept without notifying their parents,” he said.

The missing learner was only reported to the class teacher at school after the friends were asked about the whereabouts of the boy.

It was then that the friends confirmed that he had reportedly drowned at the quarry. The school immediately notified the family and the police.

Police divers retrieved his body on Thursday. A case of inquest was opened with the South African Police Service.
