Johannesburg – An 18-year-old man drowned in the Eufees Dam in Lichtenburg, North West police said on Wednesday.

Captain Amanda Funani identified him as Montshiwa Machwisa, a homeless person in the area. He drowned on Christmas Day.

“It is alleged that Montshiwa was with his friend searching for food at nearby dust bins when the incident happened. They allegedly decided to swim across the dam after failing to get food in the dust bins in order to look for food on the other side.”

When his friend realised the water was too dangerous for them he decided against swimming across the dam, but Montshiwa continued swimming and he drowned.

His friend called for help when he could no longer see his friend in the water.

“Police divers were alerted and they searched and discovered the deceased’s body. He was taken to a state mortuary and investigation continues,” Funani said. – Sapa
