Mafikeng - No infringements of human rights will be tolerated at North West University, its council's executive committee said on Monday.

This followed reports of alleged Nazi-style saluting by first year students during an initiation ceremony at the Potchefstroom campus.

“Exco deliberated on the implications of the articles on the reputation of the university, and resolved that it would await the internal disciplinary reports that are being finalised after an internal investigation by the NWU legal office,” it said in a statement.

“Exco has called for an extraordinary meeting of the NWU council that is to be held as soon as possible.”

Beeld newspaper reported on Friday that some students used the stiff-armed Nazi salute during an initiation ceremony. It published photographs showing them doing so.

The council said it noted strategies had been put in place to deal with the situation. These included the establishment of a blog by the campus rector to encourage discussions, a committee chaired by an independent expert to discuss the issues and suggestions raised on the blog, and the appointment of an industrial psychologist in the office of the dean of students.
