Rustenburg - The deputy leader of the Democratic Alliance (DA) in North West, Petro Nel remains missing in Nepal, the party said on Friday.

“Search teams in Nepal have resumed searching this morning [Friday] for Nel’s light aircraft. We await news from Nepal. Together with DA leader Mmusi Maimane, I will hold a vigil and prayer this afternoon for the safe return of Petro Nel,” said Joe McGluwa, the party’s leader in North West.

He said the prayer session would be held in Johannesburg. McGluwa was attending a meeting in Johannesburg.

“Petro is and has been a pillar of the DA in the North West, and our only thoughts now are for her safe return,” said MGluwa.

Nel was on a sight-seeing flight over a mountainous area when all contact was lost with the aircraft on Thursday.

Nel served as a DA ward councillor in the Matlosana municipality in Klerksdorp and earlier this year received the special Paul Harris Rotary Award for her extreme dedication towards community work and upliftment.

She was elected DA North West deputy leader in 2015.

McGluwa said: “The Democratic Alliance holds Petro’s family in our most sincere thoughts. Her husband JC, two sons, family and friends have the full support of the DA, as we all hope for her safe return.”
