A 98-year-old woman has been strangled in her home in Tloung Village, Mahikeng, North West police said on Sunday.

Colonel Emelda Setlhako said police were investigating whether the woman was raped before she was killed.

Her body was found by her grandson on Saturday.

“The victim's grandson alleges that he was on his way to a funeral and decided to have a look at his grandmother,” Setlhako said.

“He found the victim lying on the floor covered with a blanket. There was dry blood on the mats and underneath the blanket (and)... the victim had bruises on her face and strangling marks on her neck.”

The grandson, who was in another room in the house at time, apparently heard something fall in the woman's room earlier in the day, but did not investigate. - Sapa
