Rustenburg - A medical student trained in Cuba died in a road crash in the North West province, the provincial department of health said on Tuesday.

The province’s Health MEC Dr Magome Masike said Goitsemodimo Donald Macwili from Rooival in Taung died on Saturday.

Masike said Macwili had just completed his 5th year of medical studies in Cuba.

“He arrived home in Taung on Saturday from O.R. Tambo International Airport, and at about 9pm he went out to visit his friend in the same area. They travelled together to Pampierstad and on their way back they both tragically lost their lives in an accident.”

Masike said the loss of life, especially that of a young person like Goitsemodimo, was always tragic and “hard to accept.”

“It is a great loss not only to the family but the entire Bokone Bophirima Province [North West]. We would like to convey our heartfelt condolences to the family and we wish them strength to heal through this difficult and trying moment,” said Masike.

“As a department in need of health professionals we cannot afford loosing those that we train. It is a setback to the province.”
