NWU student drowns in campus pool

Rustenburg - A first-year student at the North-West University died after getting into difficulties while swimming on campus at the weekend, the institution said on Monday.

Vice-Chancellor Dan Kgwadi said Xavier Klein, 19, a first-year student in B.Comm financial accounting at the Potchefstroom campus, died on Saturday after going swimming at the campus pool with three friends.

After swimming a couple of lengths, Xavier, from Groblershoop in the Northern Cape, told his friends he did not feel well. He sat on the side of the pool for a while before going for another swim which is when his friends noticed him experiencing some difficulties.

“His friends quickly observed that he was in trouble, and – together with fellow students – got him out of the water and immediately started with CPR [Cardiopulmonary resuscitation]. Emergency services was nearby at the netball tournament, and responded within minutes,” said Kgwadi.

He was taken to Mediclinic via ambulance, but died in the Intensive Care Unit on Saturday night.

“Once the post mortem has been conducted, the cause of death will be know,” said Kgwadi.

Campus spokesman Johan van Zyl said the post mortem would be conducted on Tuesday, and funeral arrangements were not yet finalised.

“The rector spoke to the mother of the deceased yesterday [Sunday], she indicated that funeral arrangement are yet to be finalised. The University will be informed of the funeral,” he said.

Xavier was the University’s fifth student to die in unforeseen circumstances in the last four weeks.

Earlier, three female students died in a car accident. Later, a female student died of meningitis.

“Every death of a student is a tragic occurrence. Our country´s future lies in our young people – particularly in such talented persons. My condolences go out to the parents, family and friends. Please keep them in your prayers.” Prof Kgwadi said.
