Rustenburg – Two prison wardens were killed and a prisoner survived when their car collided with a truck on the N4 road in Groot Marico on Friday, the North West Community Safety and Transport Management department said.

It is alleged that the truck driver braked and swerved in an attempt to avoid crashing into vehicles in front of him. In the process, the truck collided with oncoming vehicles.

The correctional services vehicle was driving from Zeerust in the direction of Swartruggens while the truck was travelling in the opposite direction.

North West Community Safety and Transport Management MEC Mpho Motlhabane sent his deepest sympathy to the families of the deceased.

“We wish to send our deepest sympathy to the bereaved families. It is heartbreaking to think of the fact that someone has just become a widow and a child somewhere in the families of the bereaved is now an orphan just because of this unfortunate accident. The rate we are losing lives of our beloved ones is heartbreaking,” he said.
