Rustenburg - An International Convention Centre (ICC), estimated to cost R683 million, will be built in Rustenburg in the North West, executive mayor Mpho Khunou said on Tuesday.

“The ICC will be combined with two hotels adjacent to it as well as retail outlets and possibly residential development nearby. The estimated cost are for the ICC only and do not include the two hotels and residential development,” he said during his state of the city address.

He said expression of interest would be invited from potential investors during the next financial year.

The municipality would also use R20 million for a flea market and amusement park.

The flea market in the CBD was aimed at addressing market access for farmers and crafters.

“Our small scale farmers will be interacting directly with consumers selling fresh fruit an vegetables, with catering companies giving both local and tourists the culinary taste of Rustenburg… there will also be crafters and artists promoting local culture with arts and craft for those interior design projects to brighten up your homes,” said Khunou.

He said the amusement park was aimed at strengthening tourism in Rustenburg.

“We will like to contribute towards our province regaining the number two spot as a tourist destination and we want to ensure that we have entertainment throughout the year, taking advantage of our warm weather.”

These two projects would be funded through the municipal infrastructure grants he added.
