Rustenburg – Students at Orbit Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) college in Rustenburg shut down the institution on Thursday.

"Operations at all campuses of Orbit have been shut until higher education and training responded to our grievances. We informed management about this and by 9am they have vacated their offices at central [administration block]," said Buti Khisinyana, SRC treasurer.

He said students were not happy that they have to register for two levels due to pending results.

"We are facing a situation where one student has to register for the previous level and the next level, meaning one person occupied two spots."

He said the TVET colleges withheld results every time examination papers leaked.

"Every time there is leakage marks are deducted, this affects students. The institution must be accountable, it is not students who leak the papers," he said.

TVET student leaders wrote to Higher Education and Training Minister Blade Nzimande last month highlighting issues affecting them.

These included issues relating to enrolment, leaked question papers and pending results, amongst others.

The Rustenburg campus of Orbit was quiet and the administration block was locked.

The shutdown has affected registration ahead of the start of the academic year.

On Wednesday, Higher Education and Training Minister Blade Nzimande urged formations representing students at TVET colleges to engage in discussions with his department and college administrations to strengthen and renew efforts to resolve their legitimate issues.

"We call on the students representative bodies at the TVET Colleges to engage with us and their administrations as we together ensure continuing improvement," he said.
