Potchefstroom -

A three-year-old girl was killed on Monday when the vehicle she was travelling in overturned on the R53 outside Potchefstroom in the North West, paramedics said.

“The crew arrived on the scene to find a three-year-old girl lying on the road. She was ejected from the vehicle after impact and died on the scene,” said ER24 spokesman Gerhard Engelbrecht.

He said the driver of the vehicle was pacing the roadway, holding her two-month-old baby in her arms.

“The woman was driving from Ventersdorp towards Potchefstroom when she allegedly lost control of her vehicle and it overturned,” said Engelbrecht.

The infant was suspected to have suffered severe head trauma, causing her to be unstable.

“Advanced life support measures were implemented on the scene and she (the baby) was rushed to Mediclinic Potchefstroom for urgent treatment.”

Engelbrecht said the driver suffered minor injuries.

He said local authorities were investigating the cause of accident. - Sapa
