Bakkie catches alight from cigarette

A bakkie caught alight on the N12 outside Kimberley in the Northern Cape on Saturday after another motorist threw a burning cigarette out of his car, paramedics said.

The cigarette landed on the bakkie's grille, said ER24 spokesman Derrick Banks.

“The driver noticed smoke coming from the bonnet of his vehicle and quickly pulled over.Within minutes of pulling over the vehicle caught alight.”

The three occupants in the bakkie managed to exit without any injury.

Firefighters later extinguished the fire. The motorist who threw the cigarette out did not stop. – Sapa
