Kakamas - Northern Cape Premier Sylvia Lucas praised the Kakamas community for their support to the family of the five children who died in a freezer. She also pledged to support the families in future.

Adrian Madjiedt, Jamiem Madjiedt, Anastacia Madjiedt, Elzaan Johnson and Elrich Johnson were laid to rest on Saturday after their bodies were discovered in an empty chest freezer on January 19. The children, aged between three and seven years, were all cousins.

The children were apparently trapped inside the unused freezer, which was standing in the backyard of their grandmother’s house.

Lucas, who attended the funeral on Saturday, urged all parents to be vigilant about the whereabouts of their children.

“It is times like theses which remind us just how precious our children are . . . they are truly gifts from the Almighty Father.

“As parents we should ensure that we give them our unwavering support and love at all times. We should guard and protect them to the best of our abilities to ensure their safety.

“In the spirit of ubuntu we should care for one another and share each others’ joy and sadness. Memories of these beautiful angels will forever remain with us and it is our prayer that their souls rest in eternal peace,” she said.

The Kakamas police have opened an inquest into the deaths of the children and the investigation continues.
