Kimberley - Three people, one of whom is believed to be a doctor employed at the Doctor Harry Surtie Hospital in Upington, were injured after the vehicle they were travelling in overturned and burst into flames on Saturday afternoon.

Free State police spokesman, Constable Langa, said that the accident occurred between Petrusburg and Kimberley at around 3.20pm on Saturday.

“The vehicle suffered a tyre burst and overturned. Community members assisted the passengers and the driver to get out of the vehicle. The vehicle shortly afterwards burst into flames. The injured were rushed to a hospital in Kimberley” said Langa.

Netcare 911 spokeswoman, Athlenda Mathe, said paramedics rushed to the scene.

“Reports from the scene indicate that all three were ejected from the vehicle before it burst into flames. Netcare 911 paramedics worked alongside paramedics from other emergency services on scene. Two people, a man and a woman, were found to be in a critical condition while a third person sustained minor injuries. All the injured were stabilised on scene and thereafter transported to a nearby hospital for further medical care,” said Mathe.

Northern Cape Department of Health spokeswoman, Lulu Mxekezo, said that the injured were taken to the Kimberley Hospital for medical assistance.

“Three patients were brought to the Kimberley Hospital after being involved in a car accident a few kilometres outside Kimberley. One patient has been discharged and two others are in a critical but stable condition,” said Mxekezo.
