Gauteng has a new doctor - and he is only 20-years-old!

Ehinomen Iyayi graduated cum laude at Medunsa on Friday during the final graduation ceremony at the university before it merges with the University of the North to become the University of Limpopo next year.

It was a great day for the young doctor, who said he felt honoured to stand in front of thousands of people as the only graduate in his field - and to clinch five distinctions.

"I am happy and looking forward to greater things to come. I am an example of how hard work and perseverance can pay off.

"I am not here due to some magic of some sort; it is just through genuine hard work. Anyone can achieve what I have, and at any age," said Iyayi.

Iyayi, of Arcadia, is the youngest medical student in the province and was also the youngest student to have been accepted into Medunsa.

He received distinctions in paediatrics, internal medicine, family medicine, general surgery and psychiatry.

Iyayi added: "I would like to specialise in surgery.

"I am just not too sure which field exactly, but that is my plan in the years to come."

Iyayi matriculated from Hillview High School at the age of 14. He left school with seven distinctions.

Iyayi emigrated with his parents from Nigeria to South Africa in 1994 and while still in Hillview impressed his teachers and schoolmates.

He was only two when he began to count, construct sentences and do other things that most children were still incapable of.

After turning three, his mother Florence Iyayi decided to enrol him at a primary school and it has been smooth sailing ever since.

There to witness the 23rd and last graduation at Medunsa was Health Minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang.

Tshabalala-Msimang said: "This day is of particular significance for the institution, not only because Medunsa is celebrating its 23rd graduation ceremony, but also because it is the last graduation ceremony for the institution as Medunsa.

"I am proud to say that the institution is currently a major producer of medical doctors from previously disadvantaged communities.

"I wish to congratulate and extend my wishes to all the graduates."

This year's graduation ceremony saw 608 graduates, 59 percent of whom were women. There were also 13 cum laude graduates, nine of them women.
