Probe after stowaway found on SAA plane

A top level investigation is under way into a "very serious" security breach at Durban International Airport (DIA), enabling a stowaway to sneak on to the apron and into an SAA plane.

The sleeping stowaway was discovered in the toilet by cabin crew doing their pre-flight checks on Sunday morning.

The Johannesburg-bound plane was delayed while police came on board to arrest the man and to carry out sweeps to check that "he had not done anything dangerous on board".

The alleged stowaway, Lungisane Mayeza, appeared in the Wentworth magistrate's court on Monday.

It is understood he was sent for mental observation.

Colin Naidoo, the communications spokesperson for Airports Company South Africa at DIA, said: "We don't take this lightly.

Airports are national key points and our aim is to keep the airports safe and secure at all times. Whoever is responsible will be severely dealt with."

It is understood Mayeza did not offer any resistance when discovered. - Daily News Reporter
