Former national police commissioner Jackie Selebi is back in hospital.

Johannesburg - Former national police commissioner Jackie Selebi is still in hospital and has not yet instructed his medical team to apply for medical parole, his attorney Wynanda Coetzee said on Thursday.

Selebi was admitted to hospital after losing his appeal against a corruption conviction in the Supreme Court of Appeal last year.

The appeal outcome meant he had to begin a 15-year jail sentence for corruption.

His lawyers and prison authorities have said he has a serious kidney condition. Questions have been raised in the public sphere about whether he is trying to dodge jail time.

Selebi was the president of Interpol at the time of the investigation into claims that he received money from convicted drug trafficker and police informer Glenn Agliotti.

Sentencing him, Judge Meyer Joffe told the Johannesburg High Court that he had taken Selebi's age into account when deciding whether to impose less than the required minimum of 15 years for a police official found guilty of corruption.

He said Selebi was aware of his position and that junior officers looked up to him.

The Correctional Services Department decided this week not to release further information to the media about his condition, saying the constant queries were stressful to Selebi and his family. - Sapa

We have a world class medical system in this country. Just get released on medical parole, and with in days(or even hours), all your medical problems are cured. We must patent this new technology. As the country's top cop and ex president of Interpol, the man's integrity and honesty can not be faulted. Well that's what he tried telling us. Excuse me, I'm laughing too much to write much more.

I find it amazing that these "thugs" are THE MAN while they are out and about committing their crimes...and when they get caught....they get instantly ill! But magically, they get instantly better when released on medical parole....just look at how well Shabir Shaik is doing! Playing golf, going on holiday...ITS A MIRACLE! Hallelujah!

No sympathy whatseover. Don't even believe that he's sick. He's a lier and a thief, and has had taxpayers' money spent on his defence and on his medical care. He's a disgrace, and its an even worse disgrace that he is playing this game of schaik in an effort to garner sympathy from that public that he ripped off so badly. The anc, once again, has shown us where their loyalties lie, and it certainly is not with the honest, hardworking man in the street. They are pandering to this thieving scum's whims and wasting millions on him that could be better spent on the health or education systems that have collapsed completely since 1994.

He aided and abetted a known drug trafficker!! I wonder how much 'stress' the families of the drug addicts went through? I wonder how many addicts overdosed and died because he helped to provide those drugs? I wonder how many people died because of his craving for money from dealers. Sorry to hear you're 'stressed' Dude. Hope you rot in jail.

@Joe, you are pathetic, what is the job of a lawyer is it not to defend hisher client whether guilty or not? Your hatred for the ANC clouds your judgement and comments, the same goes for Pat. There are lot of highly ethical members of the ANC, like Cyril Ramaphosa, Trevor Manuel, Pravihn to mention just three, for you guys to apply the blanket analysis to everyone is uncalled for. Maybe you need to look deep in yourself, perharps you are jealous that you are not the ones benefitting from corruption, you bloody Zealots.

Ag shame, poor Jackie, we're sorry you're feeling a little stressed out. It's time you and your corrupt buddies learn about cause and effect and take you muti like men. Clive Darby Lewis has terminal cancer, yet he is refused the lavish treatment you receive - it seems that the ANC's buddy system extends even (especially??) to those who are convicted criminals, not just to those who are alleged to be. Welcome to Africa baby, this is how we do it here - looks almost first world, but operates deep in the third world.

It is so clear - he is trying to avoid jail time. Let's cast our mind back to others who are linked to the government who have done the same.

Our politicians and officials don't know what it means to be a servant! How can officials refuse to give information to the Public? I get the feeling that Selebi is still being protected!
