Brussels - Europe earmarked 120-million euros to help South African primary school children Tuesday during a one-day EU-South Africa summit that ranged through a gamut of global and regional issues.
President Jacob Zuma said the grant was “the single largest ever co-operation agreement” between South Africa and the European Union.
The third summit between the two, held in the EU capital before Zuma embarked on an official visit to Belgium, covered what EU President Herman Van Rompuy dubbed “a very rich agenda” ranging from global to bilateral themes.
On the global agenda, the two sides exchanged views on the upcoming G20 summit in Seoul, including governance reform of the International Monteray Fund, as well as climate change ahead of talks in Mexico and next year in South Africa.
An EU-Africa summit scheduled for November was also on the table, including the thorny question of rights impunity as well as transition in Sudan and EU readiness to reassess sanctions against Zimbabwe, pending political progress there.
Zuma, whose country is the EU's largest investment and trade partner in Africa, said the 27-nation bloc was “a valuable partner in addressing issues in Africa”. - Sapa-AFP
