Cape Town - Minister of Economic Development Ebrahim Patel on Thursday unveiled the South African-produced full-body, low-dose x-ray scanner during the World Economic Forum on Africa (WEF-Africa) in Cape Town.

In 13 seconds, the uniquely South African x-ray machine was able to scan the entire body.

The medical imaging technology used in the machine, known simply as the Lodox, was developed in the 1990s and used in trauma care and forensic pathology investigations.

There are 62 Lodox machines installed globally, with 28 in South Africa.

The Lodox machine received world attention when, in 2013, it was shown on popular medical drama, Grey’s Anatomy.
