SABC economic editor Amrit Manga will be missed, the Congress of the SA Trade Unions (Cosatu) said on Thursday.

“He always used his reports and articles to reflect the national liberation struggle and the aspirations of the poor majority for freedom, democracy and peace. He will be missed by all of us,” spokesman Patrick Craven said.

He said the trade union movement worked closely with Manga for many years, when he worked for the Rand Daily Mail, New Nation and Sowetan newspapers and most recently the SABC, as national television editor, head of television news and economics editor.

“We send our condolences to his wife and daughter, friends and colleagues.”

Manga died in Johannesburg on Thursday morning, SAFM reported. The 56-year-old contracted double pneumonia this week and had also been suffering from colon cancer, according to the public broadcaster. He died at the Donald Gordon Hospital in Parktown.

Manga worked for the SABC for seven-and-a-half years, in various positions including national television editor and head of television news.

He leaves behind his wife and daughter.

Manga was reportedly a casualty of a purge by SABC news head Phil Molefe at the beginning of 2011, when he was moved from his position as head of television news to economics editor.

The Sunday Times reported at the time that the move was a drive by Molefe to remove editors appointed by his predecessor, Snuki Zikalala. - Sapa
