Twenty-four hours after he went scuba diving at Melkbosstrand at the weekend, a city advocate's body was found by a close friend who had been searching the sea for him with rescuers, relatives and friends.

It is suspected Cliff Hinds, 37, of Melkbosstrand drowned while swimming back to shore and police have opened an inquest docket into the incident.

The National Sea Rescue Institute's (NSRI) spokesperson, Craig Lambinon, said Hinds's body was found early Sunday by Hinds's close friend, Carel Neethling, in two-and-a-half metre deep water near to where he had gone missing on Saturday.

Hinds's distraught wife had to be sedated.
