Johannesburg - The search continues for a Polish professor who went missing on Mariepskop mountain, near Hoedspruit, Mpumalanga police said on Friday.

Colonel Leonard Hlathi said police from Limpopo and Mpumalanga, including a K9 and mounted unit, had been searching for Dr Pawel Jaloszynski since he went missing on Sunday.

A helicopter had also been circling the area in search of Jaloszynski.

The 37-year-old entomologist from the University of Wroclaw in Poland and three colleagues were doing research on insects on the mountain when he disappeared.

“We are covering a big area and had to expand the search since Sunday,” Hlathi said.

Jaloszynski sent an sms to his colleagues late on Sunday afternoon that he was lost. They have not heard from him since.

The Mariepskop mountain is, at 1945m above sea level, the highest peak in the northern Drakensberg escarpment. - Sapa
