A contract worker in the northern Hluhluwe section of the Umfolozi game park in KwaZulu-Natal was badly injured when he was gored by a black rhino on Wednesday.

The attack on Mandlenkosi Magubane, 33, came just two weeks after wildlife researcher Kirsten Bond was gored, also by a black rhino, in a holding pen at Umfolozi on September 21.

Magubane and other workers employed by a Zululand contractor were clearing alien vegetation from the northern section of the park when the incident happened.

They had apparently seen a black rhino and had hung around until it left before carrying on with their work. Magubane walked off to answer the call of nature and was confronted by the animal.

The rhino struck him in the right side of the chest and he fell screaming to the ground to attract the attention of the rest of the team, KwaZulu-Natal Wildlife spokesperson Jeff Gaisford said.

Magubane was taken to a local clinic and transferred to the Empangeni Garden Clinic, where he is in a stable condition in the intensive care unit.

Meanwhile, Bond, 29, of Durban, is still in Richards Bay's Bay Hospital, where her condition is steadily improving.

Initially on the critical list after being attacked, Bond is now in a "serious but stable" condition in the hospital's intensive care unit.
