A former policeman appeared with five other men in the Ermelo Magistrate's Court on Tuesday on charges of stock theft and bribery, Mpumalanga police said.

Ben Modiba, 46, a former warrant officer at the Motetema police station in Limpopo, was fired in February, said Sergeant Gerald Sedibe.

He appeared in court on Tuesday with Sipho Nkadimeng, 37, Lazaros Maelane, 42, Delfus Shabangu, 34, Smith Mashokwane, 25, and Paulos Mawupeli, 26.

The six were denied bail, Sedibe said.

He said they were arrested on Thursday when they allegedly tried to bribe police to let them take a number of goats through a roadblock to a live stock auction.

The case was postponed until August 19. - Sapa
