A former South African military medic was killed in Iraq when the car he was travelling in drove over an anti-tank mine.
Johan Terry, 33, was killed along with several British engineers in the southern Iraqi town of Basra while driving in a convoy on Sunday.
Terry, a staff sergeant at 7 Medical Battalion, is the 13th South African to have been killed in Iraq since January.
Terry's wife, Danthea, was too traumatised to talk.
A family friend said that Terry had been working in Iraq for the past seven months as a medic for a British company.
The friend said that the family, especially Terry's children Mia, 8, and Kara, 6, were devastated by what had happened.
"I do not know what Danthea is going to tell her children. It is just too ghastly," said the friend.
