‘State of the Nation Undress’ a hit

INDEPENDENT NEWSPAPERS

Radio Jock Gareth Cliff

5FM DJ Gareth Cliff’s “State of the Nation Undress” stole the show on Twitter during the president’s State of the Nation Address on Thursday evening.

Many who ordinarily would not have watched the event tuned in to take part in Cliff’s online game as he encouraged people to watch the address with close friends and take part in a game.

Every time the president laughed, said “absolutely”, “poverty”, touched his glasses with his middle finger, or seemed to be distracted by an attractive woman seated in the audience, an item of clothing would be sacrificed. And once naked, you would have to start drinking.

Those taking part were encouraged to wear as many clothes as possible, including extra items such as hair bands, watches, socks, rings and vests.

Within 27 minutes of the president’s speech, Carmen Wilkinson (@SATCarms) became the first to lose all her clothing.

She tweeted, “@GarethCliff and I’m naked” with a picture of her clothes on the tiled floor.

For the 2011 speech, Cliff ran a similar activity encouraging participants to sip alcohol drinks at mention of “absolutely”, the president’s cough, and the routine middle-finger glasses adjustment.

Cliff wrote on his website that the game attracted close to 400 000 online participants.

Other celebrities took to Twitter to voice their opinions.

Hlomla Dandala, actor and son of former Cope leader Bishop Mvume Dandala, took to Twitter to mock the president’s speech.

“I really want to hear what the state of the nation is, but damn, my precedent makes it hard for me,” mocking Zuma’s pronunciation.

Dandala was subsequently attacked by Zuma fans, who were quick to remind him of his father’s failure at Cope.

Cape Town jazz musician Simphiwe Dana, who regularly fights Helen Zille on Twitter, was not impressed with the red carpet event outside Parliament. -Saturday Star

When citizens choose to mock or trivialise the offices of their govt then they are giving govt officials the right to do the same. Instead of listening to your leader and learning what he has in mind for you, you chose to engange in an infantile game in which you take off your clothes ... just because a jester on the radio told you to do so! After behaving like this do you believe yourself to be a responsible citizen or a person qualified to criticize officialdom? I don't think so. A people drunk on arrogance will always focus on petty issues and lose sight of the bigger picture. You mocked your own president, but to do that you humiliated yourself. Shameful behaviour.

The issue is not whether the President's speech is derided or not. The main issue is why must Gareth encourage people to behave like freebie no payment required strippers? The joke is not really on Zuma but rather on those willing to do questionable things because a wannabe shock-jock like Gareth said do it, it will be fun do it, do it.

thanks, Gareth. You helped to ensure that people listen to the speech which many of them might not have done otherwise. Additionally they had to listen intently if you wanted to succeed at your game. I think you should be suitably rewarded by government!

All citizens owe respect to the Office of President - the man in that office must earn respect. Zuma has not done that

Anonymous1:15pm - You got it wrong! Gareth cab be funny. Whereas the clowns in the ANC are just plain incompetent fools who would be funny if their actions did not have such a tragic affect on all the Tax paying citizens of this country. Why respect them when they have no respect for the intelligence of the citizenry.

On a serious note, who writes this speech for Zooma - surely not himself? That's the person to be blamed...Zooma only recites it. Not so?

At least it got 400.000 people watching the event when they possibly would not have done. I find it so so ironic that these pompous overweight haughty pompous politicians of all political parties, show off their [for some] ill gotten wealth to the nation. whilst listening to av speech largely about unemployment and the poverty plight of the poor of South Africa. Then they all increased their waist lines even more when they trooped off to a R6 million sunptuous dinner paid for by we taxpayers. Some of those poor people paid for that dinner via VAT. The politicians of South Africa have very little shame.

The flagrant demonstration of indiscretion and indecision by J Zuma has brought the office of the President into disrepute and his person into disrespect. His state of the nation address demonstrates there is no dignity in the celebration of mediocrity.

Gareth is the rudest person. If you think Julius Malema is, then Gareth is the leader. He is stupid at that too. But this stupidity is celebrated as humor. WTF
