A street child has died in a fire in a vacant basement in Johannesburg's Hillbrow district, police said.
The fire is believed to have been started by a candle tipping over at about 2am, police spokesperson Inspector Kriban Naidoo said.
The child usually slept on the pavements and might have sought refuge in the basement, said Naidoo.
"The basement was very dark and a candle had to be used for light, and when it caught fire the child could not escape," said Naidoo. - Sapa
