Polokwane - Rioting students at the University of the North have caused about R4-million damage on the campus.

The students went on the rampage last week after management refused to give them R300 000 for a campus party.

Police patrolled the campus on Monday, where about half of the classes had returned to normal, university spokesperson Kgalema Mohuba said.

The students had demanded the money for what they called a fresher's ball. Mohuba, however, said: "We have to be convinced why we should spend so much money on a party."

"We want that ball... we are going to fight until the bitter end," the SRC's Sello Ramodumane said, adding they had lowered their demand to R200 000.

"It is our tradition - the one time a year when all students come together and enjoy themselves," he said. - Sapa
