More than 25 000 Gauteng pupils are going to rewrite some of their matric exams, the provincial department of education said on Thursday.

Nearly 7 000 of them would write maths and science, with the help of extra tuition beforehand at special preparation centres.

The intensive programme will start on Saturday and run over four weekends, ending before pupils write maths 1 on February 26.

The official matric pass rate for last year was 60.7 percent nationwide, and 71.8 percent for Gauteng.

"The intensive programme of assistance includes training in exam skills such as time management during an examination and how to deal with different kinds of maths and science questions. Learners will write a mock two hour examination which will be reviewed by expert teachers, and they will also analyse past examination papers," the department said in a statement.

The programme runs from 9am to 2pm.

Sci-Bono Discovery Centre in Newtown, Johannesburg is also offering a facility to study for the supplementary examinations and will have tutors at hand to help.

Sci-Bono was launched by Gauteng government to help pupils with science. They are spearheading the project and will avail the centre to any pupil who wants to use their study rooms and on-hand tutors during the week.

Over the weekend other venues will teach maths on Saturday between 9am to 2pm and on Sunday science between 9am and 2pm. - Sapa
