Johannesburg -

Roads around the FNB Stadium will be closed from midnight on Monday ahead of former president Nelson Mandela's memorial service, Johannesburg metro police said.

Nasrec Road, Rand Show Road and the Soweto Highway would be closed, Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said.

“Private cars will not be allowed past the control points of these roads, except for VIPs, as parking space has been reserved for foreign visitors only.”

Motorists were encouraged to use the following alternative routes: New Canada Road, Chris Hani Drive and the N12.

Minnaar urged those attending the memorial to use trains and Gautrain feeder buses.

Trains from Vereeniging, Naledi, Lerala, Daveyton, Khwezi and Springs would be available from 5am on Tuesday.

The Gautrain feeder buses would transport people from the Sandton and Rosebank stations.

There would be park-and-rides at Westgate Rea Vaya station, Gold Reef City and UJ Kingsway campus.

Park-and-ride facilities would be available for those going to watch the memorial on big screens at the Orlando, Dobsonville and Ellis Park stadiums.

Metro Centre, Constitution Hill and Thuso House would be park-and-ride stations for those going to watch the memorial in Soweto. - Sapa
