Johannesburg - The driver of a truck involved in an accident which killed 12 people in Vereeniging was still being sought by Thursday evening, Gauteng police said.
The man disappeared after his truck collided head-on with a minibus at the intersection of Houtkop and Boy Louw roads, Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said.
Dlamini said he went to a hospital in Sebokeng and was discharged.
“We have his particulars, and we are hoping to find him soon.”
There were 12 passengers in the minibus taxi when the accident happened in the morning. Eleven died on the scene. The twelfth passenger died in hospital. The minibus was carrying employees from a company in Klerksdorp.
Emfuleni Mayor Greta Hlongwane, who went to the scene, sent her condolences to the families of the victims.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families during this difficult time of mourning and sadness.”
Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane described Thursday as “another dark day” for the province.
“We appeal to drivers in our province, especially those who transport the public, to always exercise extra caution and obey all rules of the road.”
The Road Traffic Management Corporation sent its condolences to the families affected. Spokesperson Ashref Ismail said their investigators were working with police to determine the cause of the accident. - Sapa
