Cape Town - Ever wonder who is conniving enough to steal shoes at mosque while the men are making salaah?
Wonder no more.
Two shoe thieves have been caught on CCTV camera swiping shoes at the Moegammadiyah Masjid in Tennyson Street, Salt River.
Videos of the two incidents have been shared on social media and one suspect, a 35-year-old man, has already been arrested.
At 1:12pm on Friday - during Jumu’ah prayers - the one thief, dressed in a long salaah top, fez and grey fleece top, is filmed walking towards the area where the men leave their shoes before praying.
The tall thief is carrying a black hooded jacket over his arm.
He takes a look around, picks up a pair of blue Nike takkies and quickly hides them under the jacket.
As more men enter the mosque, he pretends to tie his laces and then leaves.
In the second video, recorded nine minutes after the first theft, an average-height male, dressed in a grey check salaah top, black hooded top and white fez, is standing against the wall in his socks, eyeing a pair of grey Nikes.
He walks over, forces his feet in the takkies, looks around and leaves the mosque like nothing happened.
Lieutenant-Colonel André Traut confirmed the arrest.
He says: “On Friday a 35-year-old man was arrested on a charge of theft and he is due to make a court appearance today in Cape Town Magistrates’ Court.”
The Daily Voice visited the Moegammadiyah Masjid on Sunday and attempted to contact the sheikh of the mosque, but all calls went unanswered.
