Cape Town - Fourteen people have been arrested in Cape Town for being in possession of illegal abalone and shark fins worth millions of rand, Western Cape police said on Saturday.

"Information gathered by crime intelligence, which was operationalised, led to the arrest of 14 suspects [on Friday] night in Milnerton [in Cape Town] for the illegal possession of abalone and shark fins with an estimated street value of R5.5 million," Lt-Col Andrè Traut said.

About R50,000 in cash and an Isuzu LDV were also confiscated.

The suspects were all due to appear in court in Cape Town on Monday, he said.
