Cape Town – Western Cape police are investigating the death of a six-month-old baby girl who was found dead at her Athlone home.

Cops were called to Sunbird Court, Bridgetown, Athlone early on Monday morning.

It is believed the baby girl suffocated to death on a bed inside the house while the mother, Charlene Williams, left to collect water.

Williams, 32, claimed the baby died from a cot death and that the child had been alive when she left home to collect water on Monday.

Standing outside her house with her two other small children nearby, the mother said: “The baby was dead when I came back home.

“I just left home the morning to fetch water opposite the house and when I came back she was dead, it was a cot death.”

Williams also claimed the baby’s father left for work earlier that morning and was not at home when their baby passed away.

Police spokesperson, Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana, confirmed that an "inquest case has been opened for investigation".

But Rwexana added: “According to reports today, 13 March 2017, a 32-year-old female woke up and discovered that her six-month-old baby girl passed away.”
